Colaba Causeway Unveils First ‘International’ Hawking Stall

Mumbai’s iconic Colaba Causeway is undergoing a transformation with the introduction of its first pilot hawking stall designed to international standards. This initiative is part of a broader beautification plan aimed at enhancing the area’s aesthetics and boosting tourism.
A New Standard for Hawkers
After 28 years of selling readymade garments on the bustling Causeway, vendor Munawar Ali, 51, is the first to benefit from this initiative. On Wednesday, he was presented with a modern stall featuring a roof to protect against the monsoon, ample space for goods, and wheels for easy mobility. “This modern stall is a game-changer for us,” Ali said, appreciating the thoughtful design that caters to the needs of local hawkers.
Beautification Initiative by BMC
Inaugurated by Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, the pilot stall is part of a comprehensive beautification plan led by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This project aims to standardize hawking stalls and signage, creating a vibrant and uncluttered shopping environment. “The goal is to give the Causeway a distinct identity that boosts tourism while addressing long-standing traffic issues,” Narwekar explained.

Plans for Further Development
The beautification initiative will encompass not only the installation of new stalls but also enhancements to pavements and new lighting fixtures. Makarand Narwekar, a former municipal corporator and a key advocate for the project, indicated that feedback from the pilot stall will inform the rollout of 187 more stalls for licensed vendors, backed by a budget of ₹2.5 crore allocated by the District Collector.
Despite the positive reception of the pilot stall, Makarand Narwekar raised concerns regarding delays in other aspects of the beautification plan. He noted that while the BMC has approved funds for additional improvements, these works have not yet commenced. “The delay needs addressing, as it affects residents and the historical charm of Colaba,” he urged in a letter to municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani.
Optimism for the Future
Narwekar emphasized the potential of the Colaba Causeway beautification initiative to transform one of Mumbai's most cherished shopping areas. “If the pilot project proves successful, it will serve as a model for similar projects across the city,” he added. The completion of this phase of the beautification plan is expected within three months, promising a refreshed look for the Causeway.
Jaydeep More, the acting assistant commissioner of ‘A’ Ward, confirmed that BMC will utilize District Planning Development Committee (DPDC) funds for the beautification efforts, ensuring a coordinated approach to improving this beloved Mumbai landmark.
